I can’t remember a time in my life when I wasn’t singing! Having been born into a family of singers, I began singing and performing at a very young age, singing my first public solo at the age of 8. I participated in Regional and All-State Choirs in high school and had the opportunity to perform the vocal solo, “Do You Know Where You’re Going To,” during my graduation ceremony from Gilbert High School, in Gilbert, AZ. After graduation, I had the opportunity to tour Europe with America’s Youth in Concert.
At the age of 16, I had the opportunity to play Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz, which was my first experience with musical theater. Throughout my life I’ve had many opportunities to perform in, and musically direct several musical theater productions such as Oliver, Westside Story, The Music Man, Pirates of Penzance, Fiddler on the Roof, and A Christmas Carol.
I had the opportunity to study voice with David Britton at Arizona State University and received my bachelor’s degree in music. At my graduation ceremony, I was given the honor of singing the “Star Spangled Banner.” I began teaching private voice lessons during my senior year in college and have been teaching voice for over 24 years. I also taught music and choir in the Gilbert Public School District for seven years, achieving superior ratings at many festivals.
In 2000, I was introduced to Speech Level Singing (SLS) by a former student as we worked together as soloists in The Messiah. She explained the technique to me, and I told her, “That’s how I teach!” I felt confident in my abilities as a teacher at the time, but looking back, I know now that I knew NOTHING compared to what I’ve learned studying the SLS method. I was very interested to learn, and as I began studying, I quickly discovered that THIS was the technique I had been searching for. It was in complete harmony with all my beliefs about vocal technique and gave me the tools I needed to become a more effective teacher.
I became certified as an SLS instructor in 2001 and I’m now a level 5 instructor. Graduation from one level to another requires at least two years of continual study per level, including proficiency testing. Certified instructors are the ONLY teachers privileged to use Seth Riggs’ name or the Speech Level Singing™ trademark.
I have had the opportunity to study with Seth Riggs in Los Angeles, as well as other master teachers around the country such as, Dave Stroud (L.A.), Jeffrey Skouson (Las Vegas), Greg Enriquez (Las Vegas), Dean Kaelin (Salt Lake City), John Henny (Los Angeles), Wendy Parr (New York), Kathy Kennedy (San Francisco), and Linda Tomkinson (SLC).
I have also attended and taught at the Speech Level Singing Summer Vocal Program in Hollywood, as well as attending the Teacher’s Conferences for several years. I’ve had the privilege of working with Jodi Langel, Adam Hunter, Dave Barru, Boko Suzuki, and Michelle Weir at Musical Theatre Intensive Programs and Jazz Workshops.
Over the last 12 years, I’ve had the opportunity to perform in many vocal styles, but what is MOST IMPORTANT is that no matter what style you sing in, I can help you overcome your vocal issues and weaknesses. You will see a definite improvement in one lesson. I love it!
My studio is located in St. George, UT. I also teach once a month in Gilbert, AZ and online lessons are available via SKYPE.
